Lê Hoàng Nguyên is a visual artist working across installation, sculpture and video. His research looks at how affect and violence meet in the lives of those on the move: the ways they are sorted, processed and made to wait, and how they carry on. He locates this violence in the mundane, in administrative procedures and routine gestures, and gives close attention to the sensitivity and inventiveness with which people respond to it. The question of how accounts of exile are produced, and who is authorized to tell them, runs through his work. Each piece takes shape through the making itself, starting from objects and spaces already charged with use and history, drawn from ordinary and industrial contexts, which he diverts from their function to address these questions indirectly, through form.
